John and his youngest son, James, have just used the Direct Exum Ridge route to reach the summit of the Grand Teton (13,700 feet) in the Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.  James, a student then at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, now is national security/terrorism correspondent for The New York Daily News in the Washington, DC bureau.

The year before, John and his three children -- Camilla, David and James -- were climbing the Grand together when one member of the party became ill just below the summit and they were forced to abandon the effort.  Camilla is a marketing expert with Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and David is with a design firm in New York.
